Aurora City Council meetings are generally conducted on two Mondays every month. (Check out our calendar on our home page for which Mondays) These meetings begin at 6PM and are held in the Paul Tauer Aurora City Council Chamber at the Aurora Municipal Center (15151 E. Alameda Parkway Aurora, CO 80012. )

        • Aurora has a long and corrupt history

          • The Aurora Police force is under a consent decree from the state attorney general after Elijah McClain was killed. The judge found practices and patterns of racism and excessive use of force in APD. 

          • You can read about some stories here. These are just a few stories, feel free to share others you might know more about. 

      • Talk about why Todd Chamberlain is unfit to be Aurora's Police Chief

        • You can use the points mentioned above. Pick the points that mean the most to you.

      • End with demands

        • 1) Demand Todd Chamberlain resign immediately, and if he does not the city council must remove him from his position

        • 2) Demand that the process for selecting the next police chief be open, democratic, and controlled by civilians.

        • 3) Demand a Civilian Police Accountability Council - a CPAC. (Sign our CPAC petition here) This must be a democratically elected body of civilians, with no ties to law enforcement, granted authority over APD policy, discipline, budgets, hiring, and firing. True oversight must be independent and powerful.

Hello Aurora City Council, My name is [NAME] and I'm here to talk about firing Police Chief Todd Chamberlain, and giving community control over the police. There are serious issues with the Aurora Police department terrorizing the community.

After the death of Elijah McClain, APD was put under a consent degree for practices and patterns of racism and excessive use of force. Even under a consent decree APD has continued to murder black members of our community. Kylin Lewis was unarmed with his hands up, saying “I ain’t got nothing”. Officers shot him claiming his phone looked like a gun. Jor'dell Richardson was 14 years old, when cops held him down and shot him in an alleyway. Kory Dillard, a US war veteran, was killed within 8 seconds of the police arriving on scene. APD shot and murdered unarmed Raushad Johnson. Rajon Belt-Stubblefield was sucker-punched in the back of the head by a cop, before being murdered.

Chief Todd Chamberlain allows his officers to kill innocent people, without disciplinary action. He spreads lies about these victims on TV in an attempt to justify the racist murders, completely violating their constitutional rights. Even before moving to Aurora he worked in the LAPD as an officer during the Rodney King beating and its subsequent riots. He was sued and lost a discrimination case for allowing officers to racially harass a black officer. He made a racist comment at a public community relations meeting that he “did not want officers hiding out at the 7-Eleven drinking watermelon slurpies”. Later in his LAPD career, Chamberlain was reassigned from the LAPD Central Division, coinciding with reports of extensive racial and sexual harassment by officers under his leadership.

It's clear APD and Todd Chamberlain are untrustworthy with policing themselves. As a community member I demand that
1) Todd Chamberlain resign immediately. If he refuses, The city council must fire him

  2) The selection process for the next police chief be controlled by civilians, with direct public input and no backroom deals.

And 3) a fundamental demand for lasting change: We demand that this council work with community organizations like DACAC to create a Civilian Police Accountability Council - a CPAC. This must be a democratically elected body of civilians, with no ties to law enforcement, granted authority over APD policy, discipline, budgets, and hiring. True oversight must be independent and powerful.

File a complaint when you see an officer doing anything wrong, harassing homeless, parked in a no parking spot or speeding, even if a cop is just being rude, file a complaint. These complaints add up and show the community is unhappy with the police. This puts pressure on officials for change.
