Rajon Belt-Stubblefield was a 37-year-old Black man who was killed by Officer Matthew Neely following a traffic stop and car crash on August 30, 2025, at the corner of 6th Ave and Billings in Aurora, CO. Following a brief verbal altercation, Rajon, who was unarmed, turned and took a few steps away from officer neely, who proceeded to punch Rajon in the head. Seconds after being sucker-punched, Rajon began to walk toward Neely. He then shot Rajon twice in the shoulder and once in the head, killing him in front of his 19-year-old son. APD proceeded to evacuate Officer Neely from the scene while neglecting to provide timely aid. Rajon’s body would remain in the street as community members began to gather. It wasn’t until nearly 5 hours later that Rajon’s body was transferred to the coroner.
Shortly after Rajon was murdered, Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain attempted to slander his name and character by claiming that he was armed and escalated the situation by “aggressively” walking toward Officer Neely after being hit in the head, in what he called a “de-escalatory” action.
Chamberlain’s career, dating all the way back to his tenure with the LAPD, has been associated with controversy. As commander, the LAPD lost a $1.2M racial Discrimination lawsuit from a former Black LAPD officer. The department also faced multiple claims of anti-Latino and anti-asian racial biases, a sexual assault and negligence lawsuit against a high-ranking officer, and anti-LGBTQ harassment.
Rajon’s death has taken a father away from his son, a cherished member of the community away from his loved ones, and a precious life away from an innocent man who posed no threat at the time of his murder. Join us in demanding justice. We demand an apology from APD for his death and for the smears they launched against him afterwards. We demand that matthew neely be held accountable and be imprisoned for his murder. APD has a track record of killing innocent civilians of color, and without public pressure, they will continue to get away with it.
